Beverly Beach

Our first week at home with Mom was pretty great. I went to Vacation Bible camp in the mornings and Mom, Grace and I played in the afternoons...
loads of crafts and playing with our toys and the camera. VBS has proved an education for the folks, I have come home with some interesting interpretations to stories like when the apostles are told to go fishing for people, I informed Mom that it meant there were lots of dead people out there and some live ones in the ocean and we needed to take nets out and go get them. There was also a story about a tax collector, we had a treasure hunt and turns out I was the BEST tax collector. We took the week off early and headed out to Beverly Beach for a great long camping trip! Mom, Val and Li Fong were brave and took us kids out early so the fellas could work a little longer and more importantly go to the Portland International Beer Fest. I love camping with these guys. I was super excited and we had great time. Our first night we hit the windy windy beach, not that it stopped us from digging holes in the sand and finding fossil shells in the rocks. We kicked things off properly with a great campfire by val and li fong, veggie sushi, hot cocoa and smores! YUM. I LOVE smores. The next morning the dads showed up and we headed into Newport to check out the aquarium. It was pretty cool. There was a neat swam exhibit and some really impressive tunnels through the aquarium with kelp forest animals and then with sharks! Sooo cool to be able to walk through the exhibit and see the critters swim all around. Val made us a great chili dinner that night and a great blackberry cobbler. (Grace liked to poach blueberries). Saturday we headed to Agate Beach... no agates to speak of but lots and lots of sand! There were awesome dunes to run, roll and play in. It was my favorite part of the trip. While Joaquin and I had a great time though Grace and Esme (and Dad and Val) spent most of the time trying to hide from the blowing sand. We went on a fun hike in the afternoon with lots of big trees and logs to climb on. Dinner was Dad's green curry and Mom's campfire pies (with bananas, chocolate & marshmallows as a homage to camp food she learned from Carolyn as a kid and with leftover blackberry cobber! both went over well).Grace and Esme had a good effort for a first camping trip... Grace slept well in the tent, and had a good time playing in her crib when we were hanging out at camp, she did okay except for waking up super early this morning. Joaquin and I did some crafts and read lots of books as well as many walks and running around.
What a wonderful camping trip.
We left first thing this morning so we could make it to Alice's birthday party.
Our sweet friend is 3!!
We had fun crafts, balloons, bubbles, friends and cupcakes!
Happy birthday Alice!

Summer Vacation (and even more berries)

Its officially summer vacation!
Owen and I are taking a short break from daycare and get to enjoy summer with Mom!  We have a lot of travels and fun planned and can't wait!  It was sort of a bittersweet farewell, I enjoy playing on the floor with all of my friends all day, and many of Owen's friends will be starting Kindergarten before we return... but we are looking forward to a fun-filled summer.

Check out Owen's new pajamas that Mom made him.  He seems to really like them.  As for me, my hair is getting long enough now that I can wear a little ribbon clip my teacher gave me in it if I want.

Friday was Mommy's birthday and to celebrate it Owen, Mom and I met up with Joaquin and his family for Slappy Cakes, a make your own pancake breakfast place.

Later we wandered downtown to a temporary "sand city".  It's like a bit of beach here in Portland.  Owen and Joaquin played in the sand for a while.

Then the both had frozen popsicles and a run in the fountain to cool down after all that hard digging.

For Mommy's birthday dinner Dad bought a couple fancy cheeses and a bottle of nice wine that we had out on our deck.  Finally the weather is neither too cold or too hot.

On Saturday we started the day with a trip back to the berry farm to get some blueberries this time.

Guess what?  Our favorite berry buddies, Joaquin and his family where there as well picking berries.  I discovered that I could reach into Daddy's berry bucket to get some berries of my own while he's distracted with picking.

After berry picking, we went home and got ready for our first ever block party.   Mommy emailed the firemen to see if they wanted to come to our party and they did!  They brought one of their cool ladder trucks and all the older kids got to climb in and check out all the neat firefighter tools.

Shortly after the firefighters left the food came out and the block party really started to take off.   It was nice to actually meet some of our neighbors other than just waving to each other in passing.
We blocked off the entire street and everyone mingled out there, but for some reason our driveway seemed to be at the center of the party.  I guess we live exactly halfway down the street.   It was a lot of fun and I can't wait until next year when I can run around in the street with the other kids.

Today was quieter, with perfect weather.  I got to enjoy the pretty new dress that Grandma Terri got me and Owen got a haircut... ever since his buddies at school had to get a buzz (for the expected daycare related reasons) Owen has been wanting his hair really short... well today he got it!
