Wushu test time!

This weekend we hung around locally a bit.  Owen had a pretty exciting week.  He was selected to to regionals for Chess next month, and he tested for his next belt (from red to red-white).
He has been working hard on his Southern Fist form,  The past few months he has been in an advanced class, in part because of our schedule, but he learned a very long form that is actually used in competitions,
We are so proud of him, in part because he struggled with this form and working in a class with brown and black belts was very hard, but he did really well on his test.

So now he moves from red to a red-white belt.

In other news this weekend, we spent a wonderful (unphotographed) evening with our friends Ray, Val, Joaquin and Esme.  We got to play, and everyone enjoyed some great pizza by Ray!  Thank you guys for a lovely play-date!  We have missed you the past few weeks!
Dad also got in on the sourdough game and made some wonderful English Muffins (and a really yummy Benedict with smoked salmon and spinach!)
We're lucky he made a big batch because I ate at least four today alone (I prefer them plain).

Dad and Owen went out fishing today, so Mom and I spent the day with some minor yard work, arts and crafts, a bit of fun with the chemistry set and sewing.
The guys didn't catch anything, and spent a lot of time sitting in the rain, but I think they were just happy to get out.
This evening we wrapped won-tons, and stocked up for our favorite quick dinner meal.  We are grateful for a healthy and fairly relaxed weekend and really proud of Owen!

Churros are yummy!!!!

My dad started making bread. (These are Grace's tiny hands mixing dough, not Brian's and the final bread product is really amazing and beautiful!)
My sister is learning chess.shes not that good. (yet)

Me and my mom went to a place called *XURROLAND. (*correction 180 Xurros & Xocolata)
 They were great!!!
"To much churros" (Someone may have overdone the sweets today)
We had dim sum with my friends.
My dad made monkey shirts.
We watched some of the kids at my school sing songs.

A red letter week!

Gung Hay Fat Choi!  Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Presidents' Day!  I am pretty excited about the rapid succession of things to celebrate!
To usher in the year of the monkey, we headed over to the celebrations at the Chinese Garden.  They had a bunch of new decorations in the ponds, and of course festivities throughout the garden.
Owen got to try his hand at drumming a few beats, he did great but it was hard to get in sync with all of the drummers.
There was a fun lion dance, and of course many beautiful places to just hang out.
This week Dad started a sourdough culture and made some pretty yummy bread!  We pretty much eat it as soon as it comes out of the oven, he'll have to slow down or we'll all roll our way out.  It makes for great pizza and waffles as well.
We woke up this morning for a few fun Valentines' day treats!
Mom made Owen his first bathrobe, which is pretty exciting!
I got a beautiful new broom, one that I saw at the homested store and fell in love with.  The folks aren't sure if it's just because I have an uncommon affection for brooms or love the witchy way to ride on them around the house, but this makes me so happy!  Grandma Terri and Grandpa Tom sent Owen some sweet socks and me a bunch of cute disney critters who played really well with Owen's army guys, we played all morning.
After a relaxing morning of pancakes we headed out to Cannon Beach.  We started with lunch at Mo's (and Mom and Owen enjoying their oyster shooters).
We headed out to the very wet, but not all that cold of the beach.  Owen and I pretty much set right to digging holes while Mom took Scooter for a walk over to Haystack rock.
Even though it was drizzly, we had a blast.
Made castles, got properly wet and sandy (Until I realized my favorite pink leggings were dirty, that was sad).
I hope you have had a wonderful weekend full of love, luck and celebrations!

The wurst

Ahhhh, everyone is up and about again, the sun is shining so we got OUT!  We headed down to Mt. Angel for the Wurst fest and enjoyed some tasty brats.

got to watch some fun music and dancing (Mom even got wrangled in for a dance!) and most exciting for me
I got a new hat!  Dad helped me buy it, though I spent a fair bit of my own money and really love it!  Mt. Angel also has this awesome glockenspeil that tells the story of the town, we waited a while for it, but it was pretty cool!
Now I realize that its superbowl sunday, but we just aren't big football fans, so we took advantage of the BEAUTIFUL weather, and the promise of low crowds to head over to the Zoo while Mom graded and did a yoga class.
We finally saw the elephants exploring their new enclosure, and although we didn't quite see Samudra go for a swim, it was close!

I was a great afternoon out, and although I was loathe to really leave the house, I had a good time once I got out!

Plus it would be a waste to spend today inside after being cooped up the past few weeks.

Happy February friends!  and Happy New Year!  We are pretty excited to celebrate New Year and Valentines day this week, it will be a red and sugar fueled week to be sure!
