Tiny Egg

So the chickens may be thinking about laying eggs again after their winter hiatus... we got the cutest tiny blue egg this week!
This is Scooter's new favorite way to cuddle with Owen... watch him read and as soon as his guard is down, go in for a face lick... or put his face right between Owen and the book.  I think Scooter may be turning into a cat.

This weekend was marked heavily by chess!  Dad and I played a few rounds at home, I"m getting pretty good at planning ahead and actually employing some good strategy.  Owen spent all day Saturday at a chess tournament... regionals with his school team!

The team came in first!  Go Woodstock!  Owen and several of his team mates won awards for going 4-1, unfortunately even though the k-4 graders got a trophy, none for the 5th graders, they may have run out.  However the real reward is to move forward in the tournament, so next month Owen will go to State, and will definitely compete as an individual at State, and maybe on his school team.
His coach can only take 5 players and there are loads of excellent players at Woodstock!
We are super proud of all of their hard work and some really great games!  Goooo lions!

 Woodstock Pride!
To celebrate we went out to Mojo Crepes for a little bit of donkey kong and some impressive ice-cream and sweet fudge treats and a boba tea for Mom (she was really happy with the pineapple and lychee).

While Owen and Mom spent the day at the Chess Tourney and doing some shopping (for Mom), Dad and I had a pretty awesome day too... We went to the pool so I could practice swimming, had a super great day and followed it up with sushi boats!

That evening Owen, Joaquin and I went to a kids night out with a lot of friends from my class, while Mom and Dad actually got to go out themselves for a nice date night.  This is the only picture they had though of the outing.
Today was a good afternoon 'cause we got to hang out with our friends!  Val brought over a fish to practice her dissections for her class with Dad.
We started with some Gyuotako... fish prints, though are a bit rusty (Mom and Dad swear they used to do this a lot!  I think we did end up figuring it out okay though.  Paint, blot then print!
Afterwards Esme laid down for a bit of a nap and I got into the dissections with Val.
Once we cleaned up the mess (and filleted the rest of the fish for dinner), We got to play Dixit which was a fun and creative game to play with our friends.
Dad made veggie Pho and some mango sticky rice dessert that is so good!

Visitors for the rainy weekend!

We had a fun weekend because we got a nice visit from Grandma Terri and Grandpa Tom.  They were able to go to my Wushu class after school, then out to a lovely dinner at Besaws.
The food was great, but the company even better!
They also brought Zoe, and since Grace and I took turns staying at the hotel with Grandma and Grandpa, Zoe stayed at our house and buddied up with Scooter.

I had a big day on Saturday, I spent the whole day at a Chess tournament, sort of a mixed bag... 3 losses 2 wins but all really good games! It's not much for pictures, but afterwards I went to Amelia's birthday party at the skate rink.
It was a super afternoon and I skated up a storm
In addition to having fun with my friends, and being able to share in the celebration of Amelia's birthday,  I got to see Autumn who moved to a different school last year, and it was fun to see her again as well

After trying to visit at the Chess tournament, which is a mix of chaos with kids running around between tournaments, then waiting outside of closed rooms (mine had its window covered with a poster), Grandma and Grandpa just visited for a bit, then went to get some ramen for lunch with Grace and Mom.
For dinner, they made tacos (with homemade tortillas!)

In all, it was a pretty short visit, but we managed some quality time all around.  They took off today in an effort to beat the next rainstorm, and I think they did it!  Thank you for the visit, the company, the sleepovers and all of the yummy food! It was good to see you.  Today we bode them farewell, made a family trip to Ikea (always risky) and tonight got to enjoy a concert to benefit a family at Woodstock.  The concert featured Chuck Cheesman, who was super great for all the kids (and got the adults involved too).

Two other artists also helped out, Amanda Spring

and Sallie Ford, she was great!

It has been a great time folks, and I hope you are weathering all of this rain well enough.  There are reports of flooding around our California crew, and we hope you are all staying dry!

feelin the love

On Friday morning our school had an assembly celebrating Chinese New Year's.    We all got to wear cool head bands and watched a variety of performances.

We started the celebration with a dragon dance that marched through the audience.

The school's chinese yo-yo team did a demonstration and Dad almost got hit in the head when one got loose!  We have a yo-yo like this at home and I think I might try it again.

The Chinese dance club also performed a few traditional dances.

Valentines day is this week and I was busy making sweet felt banners for my classmates.  Owen is giving away pieces of his home-made chocolate.

Dad worked at the sportsmen's show on Saturday, helping to promote kayak fishing.   Meanwhile, Owen had a "battle of the books" team meeting.  So, Mom and I had a chance to go to a coffee shop and grab some treats.

All in all a nice weekend, pretty mellow but we got a lot done!

It's a zoo!

It was a lovely weekend here in Portland.  We didn't have a big agenda but kept pleasantly busy!

We had a few game nights and Scooter who has always liked cuddling with Mom has taken to snuggling with me (he likes to try to put his rump exactly where mine is), Owen (he likes to try to read too!) and Dad (right underneath the blanket).
Dad and Owen spent Saturday at Freegeek learning how to take apart and build computers.  Mom took me and Esme to the zoo to see Nora the new polar bear!  Although it was a little drizzly, it was really an awesome day for the zoo.  A lot of animals were out, including the condors who just laid their first egg for 2017, and were all out with their wings outspread!

A quick visit in with the penguins, but they weren't very busy today so we sat with the display
The star was definitely Nora who was out playing for quite a long time until the keepers distracted her with some fish in a treat ball (also fun, but I think wore her out!)
She kept playing with a carbouy and jumping off of this log... look a flying polar bear!
she had us captivated for a long time!
We also got a few up-closes with the elephants
The orangutans were also busy!  They have an indoor-outdoor habitat, and would start inside, take the sheet, cover themselves up and go outside and forage for carrots, then head back inside before the next orangutan would grab the sheet and do it again!  THey must really not like getting wet (and really like carrots)!
We had a blast... the zoo is best on drizzly days, no crowds and active animals!

Owen made his next batch of chocolate this weekend!  He conched it for over a day, and the flavor is really good, though they will need to retemper it.  He wanted to hand-peel the beans which increases the yield a lot, but took forever!

Today, Mom and I stayed home, ran some errands (just in case all of this rain turns to snow again) and Dad and Owen went to a superbowl party.  While Owen was only mildly interested in the ball game, he said the snacks were fantastic!
